My name is Gayl and I have lived and worked in South Korea for a total of seven years, teaching English to people of all ages from kindergarten kids to adults. On the whole, this is rewarding but it can have its frustrating moments.

Although there is a danger of the work becoming monotonous when repeatedly teaching much the same thing, it does have its humorous moments as well – most of which pass by the students unrecognized and unappreciated, but make me smile on the inside.

I guess one thing I have learned from living here as a 'foreigner' in a sometimes very foreign land, is to recognize the small gems that are
unexpectedly sprinkled into the mix of everyday life and not leave them unnoticed.

Whether they be an act of kindness or a humorous situation; a sense of satisfaction or a flash of insight, they need to be picked up, brushed off and kept for later when things are not so positive. I feel that my opportunity to make this website was one of those chance situations.

Having lived a comparatively isolated life for a few years in a culture that does not always fit comfortably, I have had to actively look for things to create my own positive experiences, and going to the sauna has been one of those.

In a group oriented society, going to the sauna often happens as a family or with a group of friends. I remember one time, sitting alone under the shower doing what one normally does, when an old lady came over and started to scrub my back. This is high on my Random Acts of Kindness list - one of those fleeting moments that stay around for a lifetime.

At first, I found the sauna to be one of the few places to escape the noise and pollution of the city, but as I learned to appreciate the health benefits I became more attracted to the sauna and its health inducing role in everyday life.

Choosing to make this website gave me the impetus to research further the health benefits of saunas and the important place they have in many cultures, both in terms of health and lifestyle. It also made me determined to install a home sauna when I return to my home.

In addition to saunas I have learned to love the traditional paper art of Korea – called Hanji. The traditional use of paper in Korea is both aesthetically beautiful and environmentally responsible. The use of this easily renewable and environmentally friendly resource will be the focus of my next SBI website, so when it is up and running I hope you will drop by.
