Steam Shower Units - A Modern Adaptation of an Ancient Tradition

Modern Steam Shower Units: technology’s answer to an old style Steam Bath

iconSteam Shower Units, Steam Rooms and
Steam Baths - What is the Difference?

These Steam Units give you the benefits of a Steam Room with the convenience and ambiance of modern interior design. Today, with a Traditional Sauna you have the choice of using it as a Dry Sauna Room or Wet Sauna Room, depending on how you use the heater. However, Steam Units do not give you that choice as they offer only a wet sauna experience, as does any steam enclosure.

As with Wet Saunas, Steam Shower Units use steam (by means of a steam generator) as the heat source, which means high humidity and lots of sweating. The actual temperature may be lower than that of an Infrared Sauna, for example, but you may feel the intensity of the heat

due to the high humidity.

Dry and Steam Saunas are constructed with a variety of timbers and in a variety of designs – the choice of which is dependent upon personal preference and cost. These Steam Showers are a sealed steam enclosure, often made from acrylic or fiberglass sheets and are installed as a complete unit.

All you really need is power and water supply, plus an appropriate place to put the Steam Shower.

iconHow do Steam Shower Units Work?

Basically, just a steam enclosure and a steam generator.

These units are very simple to operate, and installing Steam Shower Units or a Steam Bath is not a problem provided space is available. The steam enclosures are sealed so as to contain the vapour from water heated by the steam generator.

A steam generator should have a time and temperature setting. The higher the wattage of the steam generator, the more quickly the water will reach boiling point and produce steam.

iconWhat are my Design Choices?

A custom steam shower or pre-built unit is the basic choice.

Choosing a module that complements your bathroom in terms of design, colour and shape will serve to enhance your existing interior design. You may even prefer a combination unit; a steam Shower and sauna that sit side by side.

Larger Steam Shower Units can come with special steam shower seats for more than one person, so you do not have to enjoy the experience alone. You can choose from a wide range of custom steam showers or a pre-built steam enclosure. Manufacturers are many and each have their individual strengths.

The units can be designed for a corner or straight wall, or they may be circular and completely portable. They can also be combined with a bath tub rather than a shower base – giving you a true steam

bath, as well as greater flexibility of use and value for money.

iconHow can I Check for Quality?

As with everything else – quality varies.

It is a good idea to check not only the quality of the product but also the quality of the after sales service.

Firstly, give the steam unit a shake to see how it holds together – or not. If it feels flimsy, then it is. The thickness of the acrylic or fiberglass panel will determine how strong the Steam Shower Unit is. The quality of the fiberglass will also determine how the product ages in regard to discolouration. No one wants something that is going to turn an ugly shade of yellow and look dated within a short period of time. A good quality acrylic will be scratch resistant and keep its bright appearance. Any glass should be safety glass, obviously.

All metal fittings need to be of good quality and well manufactured. There is nothing worse than fittings that fall to pieces or separate from their surfaces after a short time of use – most annoying, and looks really ugly.

Having steam shower doors that are well sealed is most important because you need all the steam inside, not outside. This will require magnetic door strips.

Finally, ask about quality control procedures for the manufacturer’s products. What certificates or warranty is offered and find out if they have a reputation for making good their promises.

iconAre Steam Shower Units my Best Choice?

New innovations make steam shower units better all the time.

The benefits of steam as an aid to health have been known for so long it is indisputable. The History of Saunas is evidence that using heat and steam to enable good health has been the foundation of health practice in many cultures, both ancient and modern.

The Greeks, Romans, Turks, Finns and American Indians, to name but a few, have all used sweating to control illness and promote good health. The use of heat and steam as an aid to beauty is also well documented.

Three major issues for us today are:

How can I Manage Stress?
How can I eliminate body toxins?
How can I achieve healthy weight loss?

Home Steam Shower Units may be your best option. With a little effort you can become an interior designer yourself, and upgrade your bathroom design to give you the luxurious feeling of ‘resort living’ - everyday.
