What the Ancients Knew

You have no doubt already heard of the famous statement - Give me the power to create a fever and I will cure any illness.”
Steam Rooms and steam therapy are nothing new; they date back to the ancient Greeks and Romans. The Greeks considered a Steam Bath to be a necessary part of their sports preparation due to the fact that it lessened sporting injuries.

After a rigorous workout, spending some time in a Steam Room helps reduce the lactic acids in the body and reduces soreness.

Visiting a Steam Bath, whether the Turkish or Russian style, is something everyone should experience. However, since this may not be possible for you personally, options do exist. Having Steam Saunas in the home in the form of a Steam Room or Steam Bath is both desirable and possible, regardless of whether you have only a limited amount of money or space.

        Steam Rooms?

In a word – Many!

A Steam Bath or Steam Room is a simple way to take control of your own health and beauty routine. As the heat opens the pores of your skin, the sweat glands get working and start to excrete the toxins from your body. This is significant as sweat is known to contain similar elements as urine, and for this reason the skin is referred to as the ‘third kidney’ - and we know how important it is for our kidneys to function well and do their job of elimination.

In Steam Saunas the natural process of cooling down through perspiration does not occur due to the constant presence and working of the steam. This procedure does not allow for the loss of any body heat, which improves efficiency in the natural body detox process.

Steam Saunas do not allow for any dehydration of the skin, nor do they allow toxins that have been eliminated to dry on the skin. With continued use of this skin therapy, a beautiful glowing skin is a sure result.

A Steam Sauna has a positive effect on the cardiovascular system because with increased heat the pulse rate increases from about 75 beats per minute to 100 to 150 beats per minute. This results in the increase of blood circulation but not blood pressure due to the fact that heat causes the skin’s blood vessels to expand, thereby accommodating the increased blood flow.

How does Raising the Body’s Temperature Help?

Hypothermia

A state of hypothermia exists when your body temperature increases above its normal level. Hypothermia stimulates the hypothalamus (the gland that maintains normal body temperature) and induces a fever like condition in the body.

Fever is one of the most powerful weapons the body has for fighting diseases. The fever causes numerous responses in the body, one being that invading organisms will often not tolerate the increase in body temperature and die from being overheated.

That is good news on so many levels. This means that just by spending some time in a hot environment you can help your body to fight disease in your body’s natural way. Cheap, simple and painless! It also means you strengthen your immune system so that your body is more able to fight off other more serious infections.

Your Body Knows What to Do

Sweating is a simple, affordable and safe way to ensure a healthy, beautiful skin. Opening of the pores of the skin allows cleansing by enhancing circulation, allowing the increased blood flow to bring needed nutrients to the skin while the sweat helps expel toxins.

Those areas of the body that suffer from poor circulation will benefit from this process. Having a Steam Room as a Home Sauna is convenient, private and will cost less than going to a beauty spa.

Cellulite

It is not so difficult to see how this can help cellulite. According to research, heat helps loosen fatty tissue, and by making it less solid it can be broken down more easily and subsequently dealt with by the body. One thing I have noticed in my sauna-going time here in Asia is the obvious lack of cellulite among the ladies.

Collagen

As we know, collagen production lessens with age so it makes sense to do whatever is possible to help the body delay this unfortunate turn of events. As the increased blood flow flushes nutrients to the skin as a result of the body’s rising heat, this process aids the development of collagen. Of course, the more collagen we have the fewer wrinkles we have due to the skin’s increased elasticity and tone – the perfect anti aging beauty treatment.

One thing just adds to the other to create a positive run-on effect.

Anything Else I Should Know?

Hyperthermic therapies aren't recommended for everyone. Individuals who have heart disease, high blood pressure, or other cardiovascular problems should consult with their health care practitioner before using a Steam Room or sauna. In addition, a Steam Bath is not always recommended for pregnant women, small children, or the elderly. Hyperthermic therapy is also not recommended for those who have an existing fever or an open wound.

Because a Steam Bath or Steam Room unavoidably elevates body temperature, refrain from using one after rigorous exercise until your body cools to its natural temperature.

Steam therapy is quick. Your maximum time in a Steam Room shouldn't exceed 20 minutes.

You can lose up to a pint of fluid in a 15-minute Steam Bath. Be sure to go into a Steam Room well-hydrated and drink plenty of fluids after wards to replace fluids lost during your Steam Bath.

        Maintenance

Some Simple Guidelines

In a traditional sauna, steam is generated by pouring water onto hot rocks which results in the temperature rising to about 160 degrees Fahrenheit. However, a Steam Bath or Steam Room is quite different and requires the use of a steam generator to take the temperature to around 115 degrees Fahrenheit. While the Steam Room or Steam Bath does not have such a high temperature, it has a humidity level of nearly 100 percent.

Due to the high level of humidity, Steam Saunas need to be constructed of tile, marble or acrylic (as are Steam Shower Units). Fixtures need to be made of rustproof material such as stainless steel or plastic. Ceilings and benches should ideally be sloped in order to allow the water to run off and into a floor drain.

Cleaning is quite simple – just wash out with a cleansing agent that your supplier recommends. Be sure to leave the door open at times to allow fresh air to flow through the steam room and diminish odors.

Steam Therapy is nature’s way of keeping you healthy and beautiful at an affordable price.
