Sauna Benefits for You

Are the sauna benefits I've heard about in relation to health and beauty therapy really accurate?

benefit
We all know the role folklore plays in any society. Snippets of wisdom handed down through the ages that vary in terms of popularity and believability. Sometimes it’s difficult to judge the credibility of information labeled as ‘wisdom’. In the country where I live, I deal with that dilemma on a daily basis. I guess I’ve lived long enough to know that throwing the baby out with the bathwater is not always the best choice, so I try to be as non-judgmental as possible – most of the time.

So, what are the sauna benefits - really? Which health conditions can they effectively help, and which claims are simply based on the combined musings of history? Is beauty therapy really helped by time spent in a sauna.

Well, another thing I have picked up (along with the baby and the bathwater thing) is that a lot depends on what you believe, what your expectations are and how you interpret the results. You can read claims of saunas being able to help the most severe medical problems and counter claims that they do nothing. I think - as with most things – the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

What I have presented here are the results of what I have experienced and seen, along with a moderate overview of information given by people with more experience than myself. This website also contains a little information about the history and beliefs of other ancient and modern peoples relating to the healthful properties of heat and healing.

You should be the judge – but be careful with the bathwater…

icon Detox the Body

One benefit of saunas is the potential to eliminate body toxins that we all have due to the high levels of environmental pollution that we endure. Your sauna offers an ongoing opportunity for a natural body detox. Respiratory problems, sports injuries and muscle tension from athletic training are very common conditions that a sauna benefits. Safe weight loss is another very valuable health benefit that a home sauna (or any sauna) offers.

icon Body Cleanse

Nothing can make you feel as though you have just had the ultimate cleanse the way a sauna can. There is a good reason that so many people in so many countries make saunas a way of life. The feeling of total cleansing will have such a positive effect on you, both mentally and physically. It is not surprising that people such as the American Indians have used the Sweat Lodges as an important facet of their physical and spiritual health.

icon General Health

Cardiovascular Disorders

Claims have been made on the basis of research that a sauna benefits cardiovascular disorders by means of heat aiding the way the heart pumps blood, due to the improved function of the blood vessels. Just the same way exercise does. Doing this regularly helps the vessels become stronger and healthier.

Arthritis

Heat from sauna therapy also helps some arthritis sufferers and can reduce the need for painkillers – that has to be a good thing.

Immune System

It is widely accepted that one of the most important sauna benefits is the boosting of the immune system which improves general health, thereby enhancing your changes of avoiding the flu.

Insomnia

Due to the fact that time in a sauna will prove to be so relaxing, you will no doubt sleep more soundly and wake up feeling refreshed. The public saunas where I live always have sleeping rooms as part of the complex. In fact, because they are open 24 hours it's possible to stay there over night - which I have done on more than one occasion.

Toxic Chemicals

Claims have also been made that one of the most important sauna benefits is their help in ridding the body of toxic chemicals - those chemicals that are beyond and above what most people are exposed to in their everyday lives.

Respiratory Disorders

A steam sauna or steam shower units are very helpful for people who suffer respiratory disorders. The steam enables the sufferer to breath more easily and relax.

Holistic medicine highlights sauna benefits as do many traditional cultures and groups that have long known about how a sauna benefits people suffering ill health.

Experience the benefits of saunas - you’ll never go back!
