The Long History of Mud

Taking a quick look into the lives of many tribal people (past or present), highlights the important role this essence of the earth plays in everyday life.

Mud along with heat, are possibly two of the oldest remedies known to humankind. Mud has traditionally been used as a process of detoxification, and while used as a healing therapy, it was (and is) also used symbolically in dance and rituals. Mud has long been used for its special qualities.

Today, natural medicine has rediscovered and is using a number of these healing remedies with amazing success. Pelotherapy (the use of mud as a healing agent) is now used to help treat numerous conditions both internally and externally, promoting good health and well being.

iconTaking a Mud Bath at Home

Mud is too Beneficial to just be used Occasionally

Taking a mud bath at a commercial day spa or natural spring means little hassle on your part, other than the cost. It is a luxurious experience and one to be had if at all possible. However, with the healing properties of mud being so unique, having access to good quality mud for both health and beauty purposes means more than the occasional treat at a spa.

Obviously, having this kind of bath at home has to be quite a different experience, unless you have enough outdoor space to do it the natural way. However, there are workable alternatives.

Just Add Water

There are a number of mud products on the market now that just need to be added to your normal bath, and will give you an authentic mud bathing experience in your own home. The products will vary as to the type of mud they contain and their degree of water solubility, so it is a matter of personal preference as to what you choose to buy. Generally, the more substances that are extracted from the mud, the more expensive the product will be due to the refining process it has undergone.

iconMud – the Anti-Aging Miracle

Just to Put a Different Spin on Ant-Aging…

The bogs of the peat lands in Northwestern Europe may seem like a strange place to look for answers to anti-aging, but findings from these peat bogs have thrown new light on the possibilities of mud as an anti-aging agent. The bodies of people buried there approximately 8,000 years ago were found to be amazingly in tact. Hair, fingernails and teeth were found to be well preserved in spite of the length of time they have been buried in the peat bogs.

The peat (mud) has been found to have the potential to combat aging due to its moisture retaining properties which protect the skin as well as enhance its elasticity. The soluble active components of the mud leave the skin in a clean detoxified state, with the skin's natural pH balance restored. How so?

This particular mud contains the residue of thousands of years of herbs, flowers and grasses so is rich in composition of bio-minerals, trace elements, vitamins and amino acids. Here is another example of nature being the ultimate provider.

iconA Mud Bath and Sauna is the Best Detox

Body Detox for Good Health and Radiant Skin

A conscious effort to detox the body is the only way to eliminate the plethora of toxic substances that, through their presence in our environment, find their way into our bodies and accumulate there within the fat layers. The most efficient way to eliminate these harmful substances is to detox - through the skin. Why the skin? Because the skin is our largest breathing organ, so it is well able to do the job of detoxing the body, as long as it is working efficiently. Keeping the skin healthy means the rest of the body can function as intended.

Taking a sauna to promote sweating, flushes away the toxins through the open pores of the skin. Bathing in mud significantly adds to this process by drawing impurities and toxins out through the skin, while nourishing and exfoliating it, leaving the skin with a healthy glow. Reducing cellulite is just an added benefit.

A Free Fun Mud Bath

If getting down and dirty with lots of like minded people is your scene, then this festival may be for you.

The Boryeong Mud Festival held each year in South Korea is just the place to experience a mud bath with a difference. Lots of people, mud, food and entertainment are thrown in the mix for one weekend each year. The ‘mud fun’ includes a mud slide, mud massages and a fantasy mud waterfall. There is also mud wrestling – of course.

In the evening the muddy party goers take to the street for a parade and various other forms of entertainment. There is even a Miss Mud Skin Beauty Contest. This may not be as silly as it sounds, as the mud at the Boryeong Festival has been found to be abundant in minerals including germanium and betonite, two ingredients often used in cosmetics.

This mud is in fact used for cosmetics manufactured in this region, and the mud festival is the only opportunity to wallow in it for free.
